On Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM, our Bumblebee Group gathers at Creekside Nature Unschool to fill the day with exploration, creativity, and joy. It’s a rhythm that feels timeless—children starting their day outside, buzzing with curiosity, and finding their own little corners of the world to explore.
When I watch the Bumblebee Group spread out across our play spaces, I can’t help but be taken back to my own childhood. I think of the wooded property where my grandparents lived in Wisconsin, and my Aunt and Uncle's property at a campground on the lake. Both places where my sister and I, and my cousins and I would spend entire days outside. We built forts with fallen branches and stumps, made up elaborate games, and explored every hidden corner of those woods until we knew them by heart. Mild months were filled with the smell of pine, the sound of cicadas, and the kind of unhurried time that let our imaginations grow wild.
And then there were my summer camp days—weeks at a time surrounded by forest trails, campfires, and friends who felt like family. We learned skills without even realizing it: how to work together, how to solve problems, and how to find joy in the smallest discoveries. Those summers shaped me in ways I still feel today.
That’s why the Bumblebee Group is so close to my heart. It offers children something I believe is more important than ever—time outside in a safe, unstructured, wonder-filled environment.
A Morning in the Bumblebee Group
Our mornings unfold in much the same way those long-ago days did for me—led by curiosity, guided by imagination, and rich with discovery. We have a few special places that help set the scene:
Gathering Grove – Our morning meeting place where we share songs, stories, have discussions and pray, setting the tone for a day of exploration and connection.
Muddy Spoon – The heart of imaginative messy play, where mud pies, pretend soups, and “wild recipes” inspire creativity and cooperation.
Story Stump – A quiet, shaded spot for dramatic play, acting out the stories in their heads and letting their imaginations roam.
Newton Patio – An open-air space perfect for hands-on building with loose parts and playing with the laws of motion.
Woodland Workshop – Our art and tinkering corner, where children create with natural materials and explore how ideas come to life in their hands.
Wild Path – Our natural challenge course for climbing, balancing, and running, helping children grow strong, coordinated, and confident.
Wonder Garden – A peaceful space for observing the smallest wonders—flowers, insects, and all of God’s tiny, intricate details.
The Heart of the Bumblebee Group
Here, children learn without it feeling like “school”, because well, it's not. They develop problem-solving skills as they build together, strengthen friendships as they share in play, and deepen their connection to the natural world with each passing season.
For parents, these mornings provide a space where your child can flourish in ways that can’t always happen indoors. And for the adults who have lost themselves amidst the chaos of rearing up little ones at home, it’s a gentle reminder of the magic of childhood—a chance to remember your own barefoot summers, the fort you built with your best friend, and the smell and sound of the woods after a rain.
Our group is small by design so that every child is known, valued, and encouraged to grow at their own pace. We have just a few openings left for this year’s Bumblebee Group.
If this sounds like the right place for your child, I’d love to talk with you.
Let’s give them the kind of childhood we still remember.
